When I fi rst began formulating motor oils in the mid 1960s it was a learning process. I buried myself in research, and through an extensive period of trial and error began developing oils that showed quality improvements with each succeeding attempt. I read everything I could on the subject, sought the advice of experts and eventually, after years of hard work and limited paybacks, developed a formula that would ultimately become the fi rst API-rated synthetic motor oil in the world.

I discovered early that formulating lubricants was far from easy. It is still not easy. Ask my son Alan. He works closely with our chemists and now handles the formulating responsibilities. Dean is on top of it too. They will both tell you. The challenges have never been greater. The increasing amount of requirements imposed by government agencies, original equipment manufacturers and other regulatory groups has limited our options in some areas and forced the advancement of new technologies in others. Furthermore, today’s cars, motorcycles and virtually all other motorized applications have become much more complex. Whether it’s a gasoline engine, diesel engine or drivetrain component, operating environments are much more severe, and the demands on lubricants are much more extreme.
Despite these ever-increasing challenges, this company has maintained its commitment to develop products that consistently outperform the competition. From my very fi rst formulation in the mid 1960s to our newest diesel oil introduced in this Action News, quality has driven our effort. Through it all, we have been the benchmark by which all other lubricants are measured. Our performance speaks for itself. And from the beginning, we have not been shy about showing it. I have insisted from the start that we publish the results of the comparative testing we do. We name the names and we show consumers, in no uncertain terms, how the products they use stack up against ours.
The result, of course, is increased sales. I know for a fact that the test results we publish serve as valuable tools for our Dealers. The facts speak for themselves, and any reasonable person who cares about the vehicle he or she drives or the equipment he or she owns will select AMSOIL lubricants over all others.
One such reasonable person contacted me recently in the form of a letter. Billy Guiles, from Mohave Valley, Arizona had seen our motorcycle oil white paper, “A Study of Motorcycle Oils,” and had this to say:
I wanted to let you know how happy I am with your AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil. I own a 2006 Harley-Davidson Sportster with 5,000 miles on it. Since the bike was new I’ve only used Harley-Davidson oil in the engine and Sportster gear lube in the transmission and primary chaincase.
After reading your “Study of Motorcycle Oils” I decided to switch to AMSOIL. That was the best thing I’ve ever done for my Harley-Davidson.
From day one I have had problems down-shifting, especially when the bike was cold. It would hang up between gears and I couldn’t get it free before the light at the signal turned green. Very dangerous.
Harley-Davidson told me it was not broken in yet and to stop “granny shifting.”
After 5,000 miles it was still doing it. Now, after I started using AMSOIL in my engine and transmission, the problem has ceased completely from the minute I put it in. No matter how easy I down-shift I can’t make it hang up between gears.
Thank you so much for your incredible oil. I’ll never use any other brand again.
Billy Guiles
I thank Billy for his letter and greatly appreciate having another satisfi ed AMSOIL customer. This serves as yet another example of how well our products perform and how the comparative testing we publish secures sales for our Dealers. I strongly encourage all those who have not yet added our motorcycle oil and gear lube white papers to their tool boxes to do so immediately. There are a lot of people like Billy Guiles out there just waiting to be shown the light.
